‘Trained today’: Graham Potter confirms key Chelsea star player may return to squad tomorrow vs Newcastle
Chelsea’s Jorginho has returned to training on Friday and may be back in the squad to face Newcastle United tomorrow in the Premier League.
The Blues travel to St James’ Park tomorrow evening to face an in-form Newcastle outfit in the final game before the World Cup break.
For Graham Potter’s side, they desperately need a positive result after three defeats in their last four games across all competitions. Chelsea sit seventh in the league table right now with 21 points from 13 games.
In contrast, third-placed Newcastle are enjoying a great time under manager Eddie Howe and are in the Champions League positions. They’ve accumulated 27 points from their opening 14 league matches.
Jorginho returned to training
Chelsea have been dealt a small piece of positive injury news before the Newcastle clash.
Blues head coach Graham Potter, who was speaking in his pre-match press conference, delivered a fitness update on Jorginho.
“Jorginho trained today, so providing there’s no reaction, he should be in the squad,” Potter confirmed.
Jorginho, 30, played last weekend in the league defeat to Arsenal but was absent from the midweek Carabao Cup loss against Manchester City with a foot problem.
The £110,000-a-week midfielder could return to the match day squad this Saturday against Newcastle, though.
With an extended break coming up for players like Jorginho, who are not going to the World Cup, there’s little point in risking him in tomorrow’s game if there are concerns.
There is every chance the Italian deep-lying playmaker could play a really important role for Chelsea in the games that fall immediately after the World Cup.
There’s uncertainty around his future at Stamford Bridge given he’s out of contract next summer, but he’s currently still a really important member of Potter’s squad.
