Reports have claimed that Enzo Fernandez has told Benfica multiple times that he wants to leave in favour of a move to Chelsea.
According to the Guardian, the Blues are set to return to the negotiation table this week to try and secure a deal for the Argentina international before the end of the January transfer window.
The club attempted to sign the World Cup Young Player of the Tournament in the first few days of what has turned out to be a sensational winter window.
Despite the additions of the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk, Joao Felix and Noni Madueke, the first position the club looked to address was that of a midfielder.
This is perhaps due to the likelihood that Jorginho leaves at the end of the season, while N’golo Kante’s future is also not guaranteed to be in West London.
The original approach for Fernandez was reportedly very close to being completed, although eventually fell short of the required fee.
Enzo Fernandez telling Benfica he wants Chelsea move
Now, The Guardian have claimed that they are looking to return for the midfielder, with him still keen on a move to Stamford Bridge.
During the club’s original approach for the Benfica man, he made his feelings clear by missing training, making him unavailable for selection as January began.
His talent has never come into question though, with him previously being described as ‘spectacular’ by none other than Lionel Messi.
While it is unclear whether the Blues will be able to get Benfica to budge from their stance of release clause or nothing, the midfield position is somewhere that the club are in desperate need of strengthening.
They have been reportedly interested in a deal for Moises Caicedo, who has been having a sensational campaign with Brighton.
It was reported that they have already made a bid for the 21-year-old, however it was also not up to the level the selling club required.
