BREAKINGS: Chelsea ‘set to offer’ veteran defender Thiago Silva another contract extension and are also linked with a deal to best young defender in the world in January

Chelsea are reportedly set to offer defensive rock Thiago Silva another contract at the club.

The Blues, who have brought in centre-back Benoit Badiashile this month, have also been linked with another defender in January in Lyon youngster Malo Gusto.

His current deal expires in the summer and a new one would likely see him remain in west London past his 39th birthday.

Silva has impressed Graham Potter as well as those high up at the club, and both he and his family have enjoyed life in London.

The Brazilian centre-back, who was won three trophies at Chelsea, also wants to play until he is 40-years-old.

Whilst the Blues are keen to secure the future of one of their current defenders, they are also keen to add another option this month, the report adds.

They are looking to sign someone who will offer competition and back-up for Reece James at right-back, with 18-year-old Gusto being a target.

Lyon do not want to sell the Frenchman halfway through the season, but Chelsea hope to convince them to sell.

They also believe Gusto is open to a move, and a transfer would see him arrive as the Blues’ second defensive signing in January after Badiashile.
